New Jersey Raised Its Voice for Women and Girls at the 15th Woman Scream International Poetry and Art Festival 2025

The Women Poets International Movement (MPI) Inc., in collaboration with the Woman Scream cause and the Dominican Directorate of Culture Abroad, celebrated in Union City, New Jersey, the 15th edition of the Woman Scream International Poetry and Art Festival 2025, under the outstanding coordination of cultural promoter Berkis Contreras.

The event took place on Saturday, March 29th, 2025, starting at 6:00 PM, at the Gilmore Elementary School Theater. This year’s festival was held under the theme “It’s Not a Game”, paying tribute to all the young girls who are victims of child marriage, raising awareness about this painful reality that deprives many of their childhood and basic rights.

A distinguished lineup of local poets and artists came together for this heartfelt cause in defense of women’s and girls’ rights. The participants included: Francia Peña, Fátima Cabrera, Lariza Fuente, Herta Montero, Ruby Escobar, Carolina Fontalvo Ternera, Adamary Mishell Alvarado, Lauryn Hernández, and Eleany Machin.

Two gentlemen, Isbel González and Jorge Alexandro Peñaherrera, also joined the cause, showing males solidarity and commitment to the festival’s mission.

The event featured the special performance of the Cuerpo de Baile Folklorico dance group, directed by Bettybelle Batista, who brought cultural vibrancy to the night. The event was gracefully hosted by Benjamin Garcia as master of ceremonies.

One of the most emotional moments of the evening was the performance of three powerful monologues: “14 y 20” by Herta Montero, “Alquimista” by Eleany Machin, and “Ruby no Robinson” by Ruby Escobar — all leaving the audience deeply moved.

Lucia Rodriguez, representing the Dominican Directorate of Culture Abroad, was present at the event and delivered a heartfelt speech of appreciation to the attendees, highlighting the importance of cultural events like this one in raising social awareness.

As part of the program, certificates of recognition were presented to the participating poets and artists, as a token of gratitude for their dedication and solidarity with the Woman Scream 2025 cause.

A special highlight of the evening was the integration of students and young talents from the local community, who had the opportunity to share their first steps in poetry, demonstrating that art can be a powerful tool for raising consciousness and inspiring hope.

This meaningful event was made possible thanks to the valuable support of Union City’s Mayor, Brian P. Stack, the Union City Board of Education, and the Gilmore School administration, who kindly provided the use of the theater facilities. Appreciation is also extended to Rume Café Restaurant and the Dominican Directorate of Culture Abroad, who provided a delicious refreshment for the audience.

The Woman Scream 2025 Festival in New Jersey left an unforgettable mark in the hearts of all attendees, reaffirming the transformative power of art, poetry, and solidarity in the fight against violence towards women and girls.
