Woman Scream 2020-Perth-Australia

Woman Scream in Perth, Western Australia

Woman Scream Festival 2020, was celebrated las march 7, 2020 at The Moon - Cafe from 2-4pm in Perth, Australia. It was coordinated by WA Poets Inc - Perth Poetry Festival and Perth Poetry Club.

This is Perth’s peak poetry event marking International Woman’s Day. Woman Scream, a cause born in the Dominican Republic and that has spread all over the world, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

Georgia Hooper, the MC, exemplified the beauty and fury of women. The poets shared from their hearts. The crowd was supportive and hugely diverse. We had over seventy people in the audience.
Best of all, we raised many funds for Starick House, refuge for women and children escaping from domestic violence situation.

Thanks to all who made it possible, especially our performers Raihanaty A Jalil, JP Lake, Tineke Van Der Eecken, Emily Sun, Biddle, Wendy Beach and Virgina O’Keefe.

Special thanks to Coral Carter, Zan Ross, Chani Crow and Glynda Ward. Special thanks also to Sheeds, Norfolk Hote Fremantle and Crow Boojs. And biggest love imaginable to the Moon Café for hosting the event.

Featuring Georgia Hooper, Raihanaty A Jalil, Biddle, Emily Sun, Wendy Beach, Virginia O’Keeffe, Ella Wylynko and JP.

Impassioned poetry and spoken word from women and non-gender specific poets. Entry by donation. All funds raised go to Starick House Women’s Refuge.

Read the report below from Leanne Barron, CEO of Starick House, domestic violence refuge.

Starick is very grateful to Perth Poetry Club for supporting us through their annual Women Scream event.   This year over $900 was raised for Starick, and these valuable funds will be used for programs to support women and children who have escaped domestic and family violence.  These programs focus on building resilience and well being for women and children and include baby and toddler massage, children’s yoga, restorative yoga and a Lived Experience therapeutic writing program for women. Many women and children impacted by family and domestic violence say that they feel like their voices are not heard, or have been taken away.   The Women Scream event challenges that silencing, and we are therefore very proud to be associated with this event.
